Fort Clatsop - Fort Clatsop National Memorial, OR. On December 7, 1805, the Corps started construction of Fort Clatsop, named after the local Indian tribe. Lewis kept the men busy making preparations for the return trip in the spring. In spite of the nearly constant rain, the Corps managed to eat fairly well and make it through the winter. Today, there is an accurate replica of Fort Clatsop, operated by the National Park Service.
